Obituary for Paul Wendell Matchett

Elwood, IN - Paul Wendell Matchett, 97, passed away on April 28, 2018 at the Summit Convalescent Center in Summitville following an extended illness.

He was born in Point Isabel, IN on July 10, 1920 to Basil and Flora (Mahres) Matchett. He married Marjorie Hiatt from Elwood, IN on January 11, 1942. While he worked at General Motors from 1932 to 1975, Paul was always a farmer at heart and started farming full time in 1975. God was ever present in Paul’s life and this was visible through his membership at the Summitville Baptist Church and the countless hours he spent as a Gideon passing out Bibles and spreading God’s word in prisons throughout Indiana. He served our country as a Seaman, Second Class in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was a member of the former Summitville Masonic Lodge. Paul had a passion for music and a beautiful singing voice. He was well known for singing and playing his guitar at church and family gatherings.

Great grandchildren Hannah and Ethan Robbins and Keegan and Macy Matchett-Ricci,
Brother, Jay (Helen) Matchett DVM,
A very, very dear friend Shaylene (Cindy) Shaw
Sisters-in-law-, Patricia Matchett and Martha Matchett
Brother-in-law-Dean Hiatt
Several nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his sons Allan and Mel, brothers, Garl Matchett, Keith (Ada) Matchett, Max Matchett and Ronald (Phyllis) Matchett, sister-in-law-Kathleen Hiatt

Services honoring Paul’s life, faith and legacy will take place at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 in the Owens-Noffze Funeral Home, 1009 West Walnut Street, Summitville with Rev. Don Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Forrestville Cemetery in Boone Township. Friends may call at the Owens-Noffze Funeral Home from 1 pm until the hour of service on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Gideons or the Summitville Baptist Church with envelopes available at the funeral home.
