Obituary for Mary Jo Smith

ANDERSON, IN- Mary Jo (Taylor) Smith, 88, completed her journey into God’s presence on Thursday, May 3, 2018.

She was born January 24, 1930 in Tyler, Texas to Fred and Edith (Swinney) Taylor. After graduation from high school, she married a handsome soldier, Verlin E. Smith, on August 24, 1947. After Verlin’s discharge from the Army, they moved to Indiana where Mary Jo worked by his side in ministry at Mts. Run Baptist Church, Fairview Christian Church, Wingate Center Church, First Christian Church in Mooreland and Farmland. In 1967 they moved to Anderson, where they served at Whetstone United Church of Christ for 16 years, before retiring at First Community Church in Lebanon.

Mary Jo served as pianist, organist and choir director in most of those churches, as well as doing whatever else needed to be done. She and Verlin spent 50 years in ministry loving their God and serving not only the members of their congregation, but the community as a whole. They walked through difficult times with many families.

Verlin and Mary Jo raised two children, Tom and Carol Jo, but their home was a place where the neighborhood kids would gather. She could always be found in the stands during her children’s football and basketball games.

Mary Jo will be remembered as a woman of faith whose life was shaped by her love for God’s Word.

She is survived by her son, Tom (Peggy) Smith; Napa, California, daughter, Carol Jo Phillips, Anderson; grandchildren, Kristin (Luke) Pollock, Gainesville, Georgia, Joel (Leslie) Smith, Tucson, Arizona, Allie (Sean) Betts, Ogden, Utah, Anna (Collin) Morris, Nashville, Tennessee, Lena Smith, Ogden, Utah, Gaby Smith, Mariah Smith and Cheylie Smith, Napa, California; and great grandchildren, Zach and Claire Smith, Rhiley and Reese Betts, and Ayla and Brynn Morris.

A service to honor her life will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 12 noon, at Whetstone Christian Church, 5940 Madison Ave, Anderson, IN 46013. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 am to 12 noon, prior to the services. Private interment services will take place at Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Fayette, Indiana.
