Obituary for Joan Sloan Ritenour

ALEXANDRIA, IN - Joan Sloan Ritenour passed away April 27, 2018 at Community Hospital, Anderson. Born Sept 1, 1927 to Leo and Jeanette (Moreland) Zettel, in Alexandria, where she lived all her life. She attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Alexandria High School-Class of 1945. Joan also attended St. Meinrad Academy, Ferdinand IN, specializing in music study for three years during high school.
Joan married Richard Sloan in 1946, having two children together, Mark Sloan and Kathleen Sloan.
Joan touched many lives during her 90 years in this world and enjoyed many activities, especially those bringing her close to other people. She enjoyed dancing, traveling, bowling, square dancing and especially music. An excellent pianist, Joan played as a piano accompaniment for years with numerous student musicians and singers in local and state competitions.
Joan worked in numerous Alexandria businesses during her lifetime including the Commercial Bank; Office Manager of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce; Office Manager of Little Lake Industries; and as a travel agent for Garrett Travel.
Joan was the first female Alexandria City Councilman, replacing her husband Richard when he passed away after 16 years on the council in 1979.
Joan married Dannie L. Ritenour in 1989 enjoying 26 years together. Dannie preceded her in death in 2015.
Survivors include: Son, Mark Sloan (Janette) Alexandria; Step son, Dannie Ritenour (Terri), Anderson. Grandchildren: Charlotte Wass, Portugal Spain; Chloe Kramer, Bordeaux France; Phoebe Cormenier, Poitier, France; Theo Cottron, Poitier France; Linsey Condo, West Lafayette, Indiana. Nieces: Jan Urban (Tom); Roseanne Scholl (John); Mary Kirk; Rita Jean Harris; Jody Banker (Jim); and many great grandchildren, great nieces and nephews.

Preceding in death were her husbands, Richard Sloan, 1979; Dan Ritenour, 2015; two siblings, James Zettel and Jack Zettel; Daughter, Kathleen Sloan in France in 2014; Step daughter, Mitzi Brown in Georgia; Grandson-Clovis Cormenier in France; Great Granddaughter, Gracie Ray Phillips in 2013; Sisters in Law- Bettie Zettel and Georgeanna Zettel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 6 pm on Friday, May 4, 2018 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 802 West Madison Street, Alexandria with Father Dan Duff officiating. Private interment will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Alexandria. Friends may call in the narthex of St. Mary’s Catholic Church from 4 pm to 5:45 pm on Friday prior to the Mass.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Mary’s School with envelopes available at the service.
